The story of how the Society aquired the Wenonah and then
acomplished the enormous task af bringing her to San Francisco
Bay is a tale of good fortune, a cadre of dedicated volunteers,
and generous industry support.
While on a yacht delivery to Newport, in southern California, our president and founder, Captain Melissa Parker, saw moored with other yachts in the local anchorage a tugboat that looked identical to the Nokomis; she was the same Woban class tug as the Nokomis. The tugboat turned out to be the Wenonah and Captain Parker bought the boat at auction a few weeks later. With the boat purchased the process of getting her ready for the trip to San Francisco began. For quite a few months a dedicated team of volunteers worked on the boat anchored out in San Pedero getting various systems going. Some commuted every weekend from San Francisco. With the boat repairs at a point where the boat could move, she made her way up the coast in three legs. First stop was in Wilmington. Repairs continued dockside in Wilmington for another couple of months. The second stop was in Morro Bay, again for a few weeks. Then was the final leg of the trip to San Francisco Bay, where she is to this day.
